Umuahia, Abia State –
Ahead of the upcoming Nov. 2 Abia Local Government elections, Hon. Anderson Akaliro Esq., the representative of Umuahia North in the Abia State House of Assembly, has issued a call to his constituents, urging them to actively participate in the democratic process and prioritize voting for credible candidates.
He emphasized that the local government, being the closest tier of government to the people, plays a critical role in providing essential services and addressing grassroots issues, making it essential to choose effective leaders.
In his statement, Hon. Akaliro underscored the responsibilities of local government authorities, which include managing public infrastructure, overseeing health and educational services, facilitating community development, and managing revenue collection. With these responsibilities, he noted, local government administration significantly impacts the everyday lives of rural residents, who make up a large portion of the Nigerian population.
“The decisions made at the local level influence the welfare, economic opportunities, and community development of our people,” Akaliro stated. “Therefore, the upcoming elections are not merely about filling offices; they are about determining the quality of life for our families and communities.”
Akaliro further explained that competent leadership at the LGA level is not only important for local development but also contributes to the larger state agenda.
Good governance at the grassroots level, he said, reinforces Abia State’s broader goals of improving infrastructure, advancing social services, and enhancing the overall quality of life for its citizens.
He urged constituents to carefully evaluate candidates based on their qualifications, vision for community development, and dedication to service.
According to Akaliro, past challenges with inadequate service delivery in some communities often stem from electing officials who lack the commitment or skills to fulfill their roles effectively.
Hon. Akaliro also appealed to all eligible voters to participate in the election, stating that a high voter turnout would strengthen the democratic process and promote accountability in local government.
He encouraged voters to resist any attempt to influence their choices through financial incentives or partisan pressure, advocating instead for a collective focus on the long-term well-being of Umuahia North.
“Our future is in our hands,” he said. “Let us make wise choices and support candidates who genuinely have the interest of the people at heart.”
As the election approaches, his call serves as a reminder of the critical importance of credible and capable leadership at the grassroots level for sustainable development and effective governance.
Barr. Anderson Akaliro concluded by expressing his optimism that the people of Umuahia North would rise to the occasion and elect individuals committed to positive change, fostering progress for current and future generations in the region.
