Developing a Christlike Attitude in a Self-Centered World

By Hon. Barr. Anderson Akaliro, Member Representing Umuahia North Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly

In today’s world, self-interest often takes precedence over selflessness. We live in an era where individual achievements, personal gain, and material success are emphasized, sometimes at the expense of kindness, humility, and love for others.
This self-centered approach to life contradicts the teachings of Jesus Christ, who exemplified humility, compassion, and servanthood.

As Christians, we are called to reflect Christ in our daily lives, not only in words but also in actions. Developing a Christlike attitude in a world that promotes self-centeredness requires intentionality, commitment, and reliance on God’s grace.
This article explores how believers can cultivate and maintain a Christlike character amidst the challenges of modern society.

A Christlike attitude is one that mirrors the character and teachings of Jesus Christ.
It is an attitude of love, humility, forgiveness, patience, and service to others.
Philippians 2:5 states, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.”
This verse reminds us that our mindset should align with that of Christ, who, despite being divine, humbled Himself to serve humanity.

Jesus’ life on earth demonstrated selflessness.
He associated with the outcasts, healed the sick, forgave sinners, and ultimately sacrificed His life for the salvation of mankind.
In contrast, the world today often glorifies self-promotion, pride, and material success. Yet, as followers of Christ, we are called to be different—to embody His love and selflessness in all we do.

Challenges of Developing a Christlike Attitude in a Self-Centered World

Firstly, note that Society measures success by wealth, possessions, and status.
Many people prioritize material gain over moral values, leading to greed, corruption, and dishonesty.
This mindset is contrary to Christ’s teachings, as He warned in Luke 12:15, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.

Secondly, the world encourages self-promotion and personal glory, often leading to arrogance and disregard for others.
Jesus, however, taught and lived out humility. He washed the feet of His disciples (John 13:12-17), demonstrating that true greatness comes through serving others.

Thirdly, Many people today are driven by self-interest rather than concern for others.
Social media, for instance, often promotes individualism and competition rather than genuine love and care. Yet, Christ commands us to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31).

Lastly, In a world where vengeance is often glorified, many struggle to forgive. However, Jesus exemplified forgiveness—even on the cross when He prayed for His executioners (Luke 23:34). Developing a Christlike attitude requires a forgiving heart.

Practical Steps to Cultivate a Christlike Attitude;

Renew Your Mind Through God’s Word
Romans 12:2 instructs us not to conform to the world but to be transformed by renewing our minds. Regular study and meditation on Scripture help us develop godly character and resist worldly influences.

Cultivate Humility and Servanthood
Jesus taught that the greatest in God’s kingdom is the one who serves (Matthew 23:11). We must adopt an attitude of humility, considering others above ourselves and seeking opportunities to serve.

Practice Unconditional Love
Loving others—even those who are difficult—is a hallmark of Christlike character.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 describes love as patient, kind, and selfless. By showing genuine love to others, we reflect Christ’s nature.

Forgive Freely and Completely
Forgiveness is not always easy, but it is essential for maintaining peace and Christlike character. Holding grudges hinders our spiritual growth, while forgiving others brings freedom and healing (Ephesians 4:32).

Live by the Power of the Holy Spirit
Developing a Christlike attitude is not solely by human effort; we need the help of the Holy Spirit.
Galatians 5:22-23 lists the fruits of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—all of which are essential for Christlike living.

Be a Light in the World
Jesus called His followers the light of the world (Matthew 5:14). This means our actions and attitudes should reflect Christ, influencing others positively and drawing them to God.

Conclusively, In a self-centered world, developing a Christlike attitude is challenging but not impossible. By intentionally seeking to embody Christ’s love, humility, and service, we can stand out as true representatives of the Gospel. The world may promote selfishness, pride, and materialism, but as believers, we are called to a higher standard—a life that glorifies God and blesses others.

As we strive to live like Christ, we become agents of positive change in our communities, demonstrating that love, humility, and selflessness are not weaknesses but strengths that transform lives.
May we continually seek God’s grace to develop a Christlike attitude, shining His light in a world that desperately needs it.
