Umuahia, Abia State – February 11, 2025
In commemoration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the representative for Umuahia South and Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Emeka Tommy Obioma, has lauded the contributions of women in the field of science and innovation.
He also called for stronger gender-inclusive policies to support and empower women pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Speaking to newsmen in Umuahia, Hon. Obioma emphasized the need for equal opportunities for women in scientific research, education, and professional advancement. He highlighted that despite remarkable achievements by Nigerian women in science, gender disparities persist due to societal biases and structural barriers.
"Today, we celebrate the brilliant women and young girls who are making groundbreaking contributions in science and technology. Their work is essential to our progress as a nation.
However, we must recognize that more needs to be done to ensure that women are given equal opportunities in STEM fields," Obioma said.
He called on policymakers, educational institutions, and private sector stakeholders to implement gender-inclusive policies, including scholarships, mentorship programs, and workplace reforms that promote equal representation in scientific research and innovation.
Obioma also reaffirmed his commitment to sponsoring legislative initiatives in the Abia State House of Assembly that will support women in STEM, particularly in education, entrepreneurship, and research funding.
The International Day of Women and Girls in Science, established by the United Nations in 2015, is observed annually on February 11 to promote gender equality and recognize the critical role women play in scientific advancements worldwide.
Hon. Obioma urged the government and private sector to collaborate in creating initiatives that encourage young girls to pursue careers in science, ensuring they have the resources and mentorship to excel.
"We cannot achieve sustainable development without the full participation of women in science and innovation. It is time to break the barriers and build a future where every girl can dream, learn, and lead in science," he concluded.
