Abuja, July 17, 2025 –
The Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Obi Aguocha, has given renewed hope to supporters and well-wishers of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), declaring that his long-awaited release is “closer than ever.”
Hon. Aguocha made the assurance during a media interaction in Abuja on Wednesday, where he emphasized ongoing high-level engagements aimed at securing Kanu’s freedom through political and diplomatic channels.
“I want to assure our people that we are no longer where we used to be. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s freedom is now closer than ever,” Aguocha stated.
“There are encouraging signs and positive discussions behind the scenes, and we remain optimistic that justice, peace, and national healing will prevail.”
He reiterated his firm belief that the continuous detention of Kanu is a moral and constitutional challenge to Nigeria’s democratic ideals, and called on the federal government to heed growing local and international calls for his unconditional release.
“True reconciliation cannot happen until all political injustices are addressed, and Kanu’s case is at the center of this conversation. We must not let our future be shaped by vengeance but by understanding, unity, and dialogue,” he added.
Aguocha, who has consistently advocated for nonviolent solutions to the issues surrounding the South East region, appealed for calm and sustained prayers from the people, saying that the pursuit of peace must remain the collective priority.
