Over 200 child rights cases prosecuted in A’Ibom since 2023 — Coordinator

The Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady of Akwa Ibom State, Mrs. Helen Eno Obareki, has disclosed that over 200 cases of child abuse and exploitation have been prosecuted in various courts across the state since May 2023, under the strict enforcement of the Child Rights Law passed by the State House of Assembly.

She also revealed that more than 800 orphans and vulnerable children are currently being cared for in state-run orphanages.

Obareki made these remarks in a keynote address delivered at the 5th Sam Momah Annual Lecture Series, held at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital Auditorium on Friday.

The event had as its theme: “The Girl Child: Building Stakeholders’ Buy-In.”

Represented by the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Emem Ibanga, the coordinator expressed satisfaction with the state’s commitment to promoting the welfare and future of the girl child.

“The Child Rights Law is fully enforced, with more than 200 abuse and exploitation cases prosecuted in family courts since May 2023.

“Through the Office of the First Lady and in alignment with the ARISE Agenda, Akwa Ibom State is already taking more steps to create a future where every girl can thrive. Over 800 orphans and vulnerable children are being cared for in state-run orphanages.”
