Peter Obi Confirms 2027 Presidential Run, Dismisses Atiku Alliance Rumours

Peter Obi

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has officially declared his intention to run for president again in the 2027 general elections. Obi made the announcement during an interview on Sunday Politics, a programme on Channels Television, where he also addressed widespread speculation about a possible alliance with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

“I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it,” Obi said, reaffirming his ambition to lead the country.

Responding to rumours that he may serve as a running mate to Atiku under a revived alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Obi dismissed the claims, stating that no such discussions have taken place.

“This is not in play; nobody has ever discussed that. People assume so many things. Nobody has ever discussed with me whether I am going to be A or B or C,” he clarified.

The former Anambra State governor also reaffirmed his loyalty to the Labour Party, stressing that he remains a committed and active member. However, he revealed that he is also part of a wider opposition coalition that includes parties such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The goal of this coalition, he said, is to build a credible alternative to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

“I am part of the coalition which will be able to produce a president with the capacity and compassion to save this country,” Obi said.

With this announcement, Obi positions himself once again as a central figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics, as preparations for the next general elections begin to take shape.
