Renaissance Berkane coach Mouine Chaabani has vowed to secure a positive result when his team visits Nigeria’s Rivers United for their second match of the 2025/26 CAF Champions League group stage match on Friday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Moroccan champions, who opened their campaign with a 3-0 victory over Zambian outfit Power Dynamos, are confident ahead of the clash at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo against a Rivers United side that lost by the same score to Pyramids in Egypt.
Speaking in Morocco, Chaabani described their performance as “respectable” and emphasised the importance of building momentum ahead of the encounter with Rivers United.
He reiterated his ambition for the team in Nigeria, highlighting the significance of the away fixture.
We will travel to Nigeria to face Rivers United with the aim of returning with a positive result, and we hope that it will be an away victory,” he said.
“We know it won’t be an easy match, and our goal is to reach the furthest possible point in the CAF Champions League.”
Murabit is experiencing some knee issues; after 15 minutes of play, he started feeling discomfort, but it’s not a serious injury. The same applies to Mehri; his injury is also not worrying, and we will consult the medical staff,” Chaabani added.
RS Berkane departed Morocco on Wednesday (yesterday) morning from Oujda Angad Airport, flying to Lagos before continuing to Uyo, as the squad prepares for Friday’s kickoff.
CAF has appointed Senegalese referee Issa Sy to officiate the high-profile clash.
Rivers United will be eager to bounce back after a 3-0 defeat to defending champions Pyramids last weekend, knowing that a win at home could significantly improve their chances of progressing from the group.
Both teams are expected to contest fiercely, with Berkane aiming to consolidate their opening-day advantage and Rivers United seeking redemption on home soil.
