Hon Emeka Obioma Sunday Nuggets: The God Who Sees You (El Roi)

The name El Roi is one of the most comforting revelations of God in the bible. It appears in Genesis 16 when Hagar, overwhelmed with fear and rejection, encountered God in the wilderness. In that moment of deep distress, she discovered that God was not distant. He was fully aware of her pain and her journey. She declared, “You are the God who sees me” and added, “I have now seen the One who sees me” (Genesis 16:13). Her testimony reveals that in seasons where humans overlook us, God sees us with clarity and compassion.

Every believer faces moments when life’s burdens feel invisible to others. People may misunderstand our struggles or fail to recognize our silent battles. Yet the bible assures us that God’s eyes are upon the righteous and His ears are attentive to their cry (Psalm 34:15). This means that God sees not only our circumstances but also the emotions we try to hide. He sees the tears shed in private and the hopes we hold deep within our hearts. His involvement is not passive. He watches with intention and love.

El Roi signifies a God who sees with purpose. When He saw Hagar’s suffering, He did not remain silent. His messenger gave her specific instruction and comfort concerning her future and the child she carried (Genesis 16:9 to 12). This teaches us that God’s vision of our lives is not limited to the present moment. He sees our future. He sees the path ahead. He sees the provisions He has already set in place. His sight goes beyond human understanding and gives us confidence when the road seems uncertain.

Throughout the bible, we find this same God revealing His attentive gaze. When Israel groaned under the oppression of Egypt, the Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people. I have heard them crying out and I am concerned about their suffering” (Exodus 3:7). When Elijah ran in despair, God found him in the wilderness and nourished him (1 Kings 19:5-8). When Hannah prayed in bitterness of soul for a child, God saw her pain and answered her with Samuel (1 Samuel 1:10-20). In each case, God’s sight led to divine intervention. His eyes locate us wherever we are.

In Christ, this truth becomes even more personal. Jesus saw Zacchaeus hiding in the sycamore tree and called him by name (Luke 19:5). He saw the widow who gave her last coin and honored her (Luke 21:1 to 4). He saw the man at the pool of Bethesda who had waited thirty eight years for healing and restored him (John 5:5 to 9). Jesus demonstrated that God sees not just crowds but individuals. He sees the overlooked. He sees the brokenhearted. He sees the ones who feel lost in the noise of life.

Knowing that El Roi sees us should produce deep peace in our hearts. It assures us that we are never forgotten. Even when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, the Lord is with us (Psalm 23:4). His watchful eyes protect, guide and comfort. When our prayers seem unanswered and our strength is fading, we can rest in the truth that God sees our faithfulness and He will reward it in His perfect timing (Hebrews 6:10). Faith becomes easier when we trust that God’s eyes are always on us.

Therefore, let every believer live with renewed confidence. You may feel hidden, ignored or misunderstood, but El Roi sees you. He sees your efforts, your sacrifices and your struggles. He sees the path you do not yet understand. Take courage in His unfailing presence. Like Hagar, you will one day look back and testify that God was watching over you all along. The God who sees will also provide, redeem and sustain you. His eyes are upon you today and forever.
