Former Abia State 2023 governorship candidate, Onyekwere Akym Uche (OAU), has warned that Nigeria is drifting into avoidable disorder following what he described as the most troubling wave of negative news recorded within just 10 days.
He called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and security agencies to urgently restore order and accountability before the situation degenerates further.
In a statement issued to reporters on Wednesday, Onyekwere Akym Uche said the country was experiencing a disturbing collapse in security, governance, and institutional discipline. He attributed the worsening crisis to what he termed “collective leadership failure” at all levels of government.
According to him, the pattern of disasters, killings, and mass abductions recorded in the last 10 days should alarm any leader who genuinely cares about the nation’s survival.
“What we have witnessed in the past 10 days is unprecedented negative news, a level of chaos, insecurity, and institutional decay that should trouble the conscience of all leaders,” he said.
OAU stressed that the situation confronting Nigeria was not a product of fate but the direct consequence of choices made by leaders who failed to act responsibly.
“These troubling times are not accidental. They are not ordained. They are the results of collective leadership failures that allow insecurity, lawlessness, and institutional decay to thrive,” he stated.
The former governorship candidate lamented that Nigerians now wake up daily to one tragedy or another, describing the pattern as unacceptable.
“Each day confronts us with a new tragedy and a new reminder that our beloved country is drifting amid a clear absence of competent, compassionate, responsive, and responsible leadership,” he said.
Akym listed a series of violent incidents that shook the country within the period, including the killing of a Brigadier General, the abduction of 64 civilians in Zamfara, the kidnapping of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi, the attack on worshippers in Kwara, and the abduction of over 300 schoolchildren and teachers in Niger State.
He also drew attention to the latest attack on female farmers in Borno State, noting that the abduction of 13 female farmers in Askira-Uba LGA by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists was yet another tragic reminder of the nation’s vulnerability.
“We cannot continue to normalize horror,” OAU said. “When women farming to feed their families are abducted in broad daylight, it shows how badly our system has failed.”
Hon Onyekwere Akym Uche urged President Tinubu to prioritize national security in a way that commands confidence and restores hope.
“This is the time for the President to rise above politics and tackle insecurity with the urgency it demands,” he noted.
“We need leadership that will reassure citizens, rebuild institutions, and demonstrate that Nigeria is not a country abandoned by its leaders.”
He called for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture, stronger intelligence coordination, and a renewed commitment to justice for victims of terrorism and violent crimes. According to him, only decisive and compassionate leadership can reverse the current drift toward national chaos.
Akym concluded by appealing for unity and shared responsibility, insisting that rebuilding Nigeria requires sincerity, courage, and accountability from all leaders.
