Sunday Wellspring: Becoming Who God Called You to Be — By Hon Onyekwere Akym Uche (OAU)

Every believer is created with a unique purpose and calling from God. The Bible emphasizes that God knows us intimately and has a plan for our lives. Jeremiah 1:5 states that God knew us before we were formed in the womb and set us apart for a specific purpose. Becoming who God called us to be involves discovering that purpose and aligning our lives with His will. It requires intentional growth, obedience and trust in God’s timing.

The first step in fulfilling our calling is understanding our identity in Christ. Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works that God prepared in advance for us. When we grasp who we are in Him, we gain confidence and clarity in our journey. Identity in Christ provides the foundation for fulfilling God’s purpose because it shifts our focus from human approval to divine affirmation.

Spiritual growth is essential in becoming who God called us to be. 2 Peter 3:18 encourages believers to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Growth involves cultivating a deep relationship with God through prayer, Bible study and worship. It also requires learning from life experiences and responding faithfully to God’s guidance. As we mature spiritually, we gain the discernment needed to navigate challenges and make decisions that align with our calling.

Faith and trust play a critical role in walking in God’s purpose. Proverbs 3:5-6 instructs believers to trust in the Lord with all their hearts and not rely on their own understanding. When we acknowledge God in every decision, He directs our paths. Becoming who God called us to be often involves stepping out in faith, even when the road seems uncertain. Abraham is a clear example of trusting God in the face of the unknown, as he obeyed God’s call to leave his homeland without knowing the destination (Genesis 12:1-4).

Obedience is another key element. God’s calling is realized as we act on His instructions and guidance. James 1:22 urges believers to be doers of the Word and not hearers only. Obedience opens doors for God to demonstrate His power and provision. Jonah’s initial reluctance to follow God’s command caused delay, but when he obeyed, God used him to bring salvation to an entire city (Jonah 3:1-2). Our willingness to obey directly affects how fully we become who God intended us to be.

Perseverance is necessary in the journey of fulfilling our calling. Romans 5:3-5 teaches that suffering produces perseverance, character and hope. God’s process often includes trials that refine our faith and strengthen our character. Like Joseph, who faced betrayal, imprisonment and hardship, perseverance prepares us for the fulfillment of God’s plan (Genesis 50:20). Becoming who God called us to be is rarely instantaneous; it is a journey of continual growth and trust in His perfect plan.

Finally, becoming who God called us to be requires surrender. Luke 9:23 reminds believers to take up their cross daily and follow Jesus. Surrender means yielding our desires, plans and limitations to God so that His purpose can unfold in our lives. As we remain faithful, grow spiritually, trust God, obey His Word and persevere through challenges, we will fulfill our calling. God’s plan for each of us is unique, and He equips us to achieve it, bringing glory to His name and blessings to the world around us.
