Igbo World Union Decries Abandonment of Eastern Railway Corridor, Urges Investigation

August 15, 2024 -
The Igbo World Union (IWU) has expressed deep concern over the ongoing neglect of the Eastern Railway Corridor.

In a recent statement, the President General IWU, His Imperial Majesty, Amb. Sir Dr. Mishak Nnanta (KJW), Gburugburu Ndigbo Dum, highlighted the adverse impact of the corridor's abandonment on the economic and social development of the region.

Sir Nnanta emphasized the importance of the Eastern Railway Corridor as a critical infrastructure that connects several key states in the eastern region of Nigeria.
He noted that the railway line, which has historically played a vital role in trade and transportation, is now in a state of disrepair, causing significant hardship for the people and stalling the region's progress.

The IWU called on the federal government to urgently investigate the reasons behind the neglect of this crucial infrastructure.
Sir Nnanta urged relevant authorities to take immediate action to rehabilitate the railway line, stressing that restoring the corridor would greatly enhance the movement of goods and services, stimulate economic growth, and improve the overall quality of life for the people in the eastern region.

In his statement, Gburugburu Ndigbo Dum also appealed to all stakeholders, including state governments, traditional rulers, and community leaders, to unite in their efforts to ensure that the Eastern Railway Corridor is prioritized in the national infrastructure agenda. He warned that continued neglect would not only hinder economic development but also exacerbate the challenges faced by the people in the region.

The Igbo World Union remains committed to advocating for the rights and interests of the Igbo people and will continue to monitor the situation closely, pushing for accountability and swift action from the government.
