Today marks Nigeria's 64th Independence Anniversary, the air is thick with reflections on the journey so far and expectations for the future. Among the prominent voices urging unity, national pride, and patriotism is Hon Emeka Obioma, Abia State House of Assembly Chief Whip and Umuahia South Rep, who has called upon Nigerians to look beyond the present challenges and embrace the country's core values of strength, resilience, and unity.
In a statement commemorating Nigeria’s Independence Day, Obioma highlighted the significance of the moment, urging citizens to reflect on the sacrifices made by past generations to secure the nation's sovereignty in 1960. Speaking in Umuahia, the state capital, the legislator underscored the importance of national pride in fostering unity and progress.
Emeka Obioma emphasized that patriotism is not just a concept but a driving force that has the potential to shape the future of Nigeria. According to him, while Nigeria's journey since independence has been marred by numerous challenges, including political instability, economic hardships, and social upheavals, these should not diminish the pride that comes with being a Nigerian.
He urged citizens to rekindle their sense of national pride and take ownership of the country's development.
"At 64, we must remind ourselves that Nigeria is bigger than the sum of its challenges. As citizens, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that the dreams of our founding fathers do not die. Now, more than ever, we must embrace a renewed sense of patriotism, put our nation first, and contribute to building the Nigeria we all envision," he said.
Obioma expressed disappointment in what he described as a growing sense of apathy and disillusionment among many Nigerians, particularly the youth. He lamented that many now view patriotism as an outdated ideal, especially in the face of widespread corruption, insecurity, unemployment, and poverty. Nonetheless, he insisted that it is during difficult times that the spirit of patriotism is needed most.
While Nigeria’s Independence Anniversary brings with it moments of joy and celebration, Hon. Obioma did not shy away from the realities facing the nation. He acknowledged the significant strides Nigeria has made in various sectors, including infrastructure, art, agriculture, and education. However, he also stressed the need to address the issues that continue to impede the country’s progress.
"From our agricultural revolution to advances in technology and industry, we have much to be proud of. Yet, we cannot deny that our country still grapples with deep-seated challenges such as insecurity, youth unemployment, economic stagnation, and political instability. The time has come for us to unite and work collectively to overcome these issues," he stated.
He further noted that Nigeria’s journey has been a mixture of highs and lows, with periods of economic prosperity followed by downturns, military coups that interrupted civilian rule, and social unrest. However, despite these trials, Nigeria has remained resilient, demonstrating its capacity to recover and push forward.
The Abia Assembly Chief Whip also stressed the importance of unity in a nation as diverse as Nigeria. He pointed out that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity, with over 250 ethnic groups, multiple languages, and a rich cultural heritage. According to the lawmaker, this diversity should be celebrated and harnessed for national development, rather than being a source of division.
"Our diversity is a blessing, not a curse. The differences in our cultures, languages, and traditions enrich the fabric of our nation. Unfortunately, in recent times, we have allowed ethnic and religious differences to drive wedges between us. It is time to bridge these divides and come together as one people united by a common purpose," Obioma urged.
He called on political leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and civil society organizations to promote dialogue and understanding across Nigeria’s different regions, advocating for policies that promote inclusivity and equal representation for all citizens. Obioma argued that lasting peace and development could only be achieved if every Nigerian felt that they were a valued part of the nation’s fabric, regardless of their ethnic or religious background.
Obioma highlighted the critical role of the Youth who make up 60% of Nigeria's population. He said that Young people play a big role in shaping the nation’s future and urged them to be more involved in the political process, governance, and community development.
"To the Nigerian youth, I say this: you are not just the leaders of tomorrow; you are the leaders of today. Your energy, creativity, and innovation are what Nigeria needs to move forward. Do not be discouraged by the challenges you see around you. Instead, use your skills to build solutions and take active roles in leadership at all levels," Obioma encouraged.
He also called on the government to invest more in the education and empowerment of the youth, stressing that a well-educated and engaged youth population is critical to Nigeria’s long-term development.
According to him, more effort is needed to create opportunities for young Nigerians in entrepreneurship, politics, technology, and innovation, sectors he believes will drive the country’s economic recovery.
As the country marks 64 years of independence, Obioma’s message was ultimately one of hope. He acknowledged that Nigeria has its challenges but argued that the country’s future could still be bright if citizens collectively worked toward progress.
