Abia State, October 25, 2024 –
The Lawmaker representing the people of Umuahia South in Abia State House of Assembly, Hon Emeka Tommy Obioma, had underscored the importance of constructive criticism in holding the government accountable, but stressed that the credibility of those who criticize is equally significant.
"No government is immune to criticism," Hon. Obioma asserted.
"Constructive criticism not only keeps the government in check but also improves its actions. However, while we acknowledge the importance of holding the government accountable, it’s essential to also consider the credibility of those who critique. This helps to assess who they are or have been, as their past conduct and motives can influence their current perspectives."
The lawmaker’s statement aligns with a broader call for constructive and well-intentioned feedback in Abia State's political landscape. Obioma cautioned against allowing voices with questionable histories or intentions to dominate public discourse, as he believes such individuals may not contribute positively to the state's development.
He stressed his concerns about criticisms originating from individuals with questionable backgrounds or motives. He urged residents and media to discern whether criticisms are constructive or simply attempts to mislead or undermine government progress.
"It is important to recognize criticism for what it truly is—either constructive feedback meant to help us grow, or unproductive commentary from those who may have ulterior motives most times not always set the best example," he added.
Obioma urged citizens to discern carefully between genuinely beneficial critiques and those that might undermine ongoing efforts to bring positive change to the state.
He went on to praise the administration of Governor Alex Otti, noting significant improvements in infrastructure, healthcare, and economic development since Governor Otti assumed office.
"Sincerely, Gov. Otti's emergence has changed a lot in Abia for the better," he said.
"His administration has prioritized transparency and accountability, and we are already seeing the results in multiple areas of public service."
According to Obioma, these advancements reflect a dedication to progress that benefits the entire population, underscoring the value of having strong leadership in place and voices that provide positive contributions rather than simply adding to public frustration.
The lawmaker’s message comes as Abia State undergoes sweeping reforms aimed at fostering economic resilience and improved social services. Obioma’s remarks emphasize the need for citizens and the media to engage in productive, credible dialogue that strengthens governance while fostering accountability. By welcoming criticism that is both credible and constructive, he believes Abia can continue to grow and thrive under Governor Otti’s leadership.
