In a bold statement addressing the current state of the nation, Rt. Hon. Engr. Chinedum Orji, the former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, has expressed his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's decision to remove fuel subsidies.
He emphasized the significant political and economic courage it took to implement such a bold policy, urging Nigerians to support the president rather than undermine his efforts.
Speaking to newsmen from Abuja, Orji praised Tinubu's willpower, describing the decision as one not every leader could make, given its potential backlash and the immediate impact on citizens. According to him, only a few leaders possess the political courage to make such a significant move, which is aimed at long-term national development.
"Removing subsidies was a necessary step for the nation's economic recovery and sustainability," Orji said.
"It requires a special kind of strength and resolve to take such a decision, knowing it would not be popular. But leadership is about making tough choices for the greater good, and not everybody can develop that level of willpower."
He also called on Nigerians to rally behind the president at this critical time, emphasizing that Tinubu needs "supporters, not saboteurs." Orji argued that despite the challenges and hardships that might arise in the short term, it is essential for citizens to trust the leadership and work together for a better future.
"This is not the time for distractions or sabotage. It's the time to support reforms and policies that, while difficult, are in the nation's best interest," Orji added. "We must put the collective good ahead of individual interests."
Orji’s remarks come amidst growing debates surrounding the removal of the fuel subsidy, a move that has stirred both support and criticism across the country. While some applaud the president’s boldness, others have voiced concerns about the immediate rise in the cost of living and its impact on the most vulnerable.
In closing, Rt. Hon. Orji reaffirmed his faith in President Tinubu's leadership and called on stakeholders across the political spectrum to give their full backing to ensure that Nigeria can overcome its current challenges and emerge stronger.
"Great nations are built on difficult decisions and sacrifices. Now more than ever, we need unity and understanding to move forward,” he concluded.
