Umuahia, Abia – October 16, 2024
Hon. Emeka Obioma, member representing Umuahia South Constituency in Abia State House of Assembly, has emphasized the critical role that local farmers play in ensuring food security across Nigeria.
Speaking to National Sunrise Reporters, Obioma called for increased investment in local agriculture and sustainable farming practices to combat the growing challenges of food insecurity in the country.
"Supporting our local farmers is not just an agricultural issue, it is a matter of national security," Hon. Obioma said.
"We are at a crossroads where the future of food in Nigeria depends on how we empower our farmers, especially in rural areas."
Obioma noted that many local farmers face significant challenges due to climate change, poor infrastructure, and inadequate access to modern technology. He urged both public and private sectors to work together to improve irrigation systems, provide financial support, and expand access to agricultural innovations.
Obioma also stressed the importance of reducing the country’s reliance on food imports, which he said threatens the resilience of the nation's food systems.
"Our over-reliance on imports is not sustainable. We must focus on producing more food locally, and this can only be achieved when our farmers are equipped with the tools, resources, and support they need to succeed," he added.
Obioma however stated his bid to enact policies that prioritize small scale farmers, whom he described as the "backbone of Nigeria’s agricultural sector."
"These farmers are not just feeding their families; they are feeding the nation. If we fail to support them, we will all feel the consequences," Obioma warned.
Also, He highlighted the capabilities of the local farmers in his constituency to bridge food scarcity.
In closing, the Umuahia South Rep, reaffirmed his commitment to championing policies that will secure Nigeria’s food future, and promote initiatives that could enhance productivity and sustainability.
"Our strength lies in our ability to feed ourselves. Let us invest in our farmers, for they hold the key to a secure and prosperous Nigeria."
World Food Day is observed every year on October 16 to raise awareness about hunger, food insecurity, and the need for sustainable food systems. The day is celebrated globally and focuses on issues such as malnutrition, climate change, and the need for inclusive and equitable agricultural development.
