Umuahia, October 16, 2024 —
The representative of Umuahia North Constituency in Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro Esq., has voiced strong concerns about the growing cost of food and the worsening hunger crisis in Nigeria.
In a statement commemorating World Food Day, Akaliro highlighted the rising food insecurity plaguing many households in the state and across the nation.
The lawmaker noted that the escalating cost of living, driven by food inflation, has pushed many Nigerians below the poverty line.
"We are at a critical point where many families can no longer afford basic staples. The price of rice, yam, and even vegetables has doubled in the past year. As representatives of the people, we cannot ignore the urgent need for both state and federal governments to take immediate action."
He emphasized the need for policy changes to address the root causes of food scarcity, such as poor agricultural infrastructure, climate change impacts, and insecurity in farming regions.
Akaliro also called for more support for local farmers through better access to credit, improved farming techniques, and better irrigation systems.
World Food Day, seeks to raise awareness about food security and the fight against hunger.
Hon. Akaliro pointed out that inadequate access to water resources has compounded the challenges faced by farmers in Abia State.
In response to the growing crisis, Akaliro urged the Abia State Government to prioritize food production through investment in modern agricultural methods and strategic partnerships with both private and international bodies. He has also stated his plan to continue to empower local farmers in his constituency to help them sustain food availability.
Agricultural experts, community leaders, and local farmers, has echoed the representative’s concerns. Many expressed frustration at the lack of support and resources available to smallholder farmers, particularly in rural areas.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with inflation and food shortages, Akaliro’s call to action serves as a reminder of the urgent need for systemic reforms in agriculture to ensure that no Nigerian goes hungry.
