Umuahia, November 19, 2024 — The representative of Umuahia North Constituency, Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, has marked International Men’s Day by emphasizing the importance of mental health awareness among men.
In a statement made earlier today, Hon. Akaliro highlighted the challenges men face in society and called for collective action to address the stigma surrounding male mental health.
Speaking to newsmen in Umuahia, he stressed that men often suffer in silence due to societal expectations and a lack of open dialogue about mental health.
“International Men’s Day is not just about celebrating men; it’s also a reminder of the challenges they face. One of the most pressing issues today is the mental health crisis among men. The stigma associated with seeking help has cost too many lives, and this must change,” Hon. Akaliro said.
He announced plans to launch a community-based initiative aimed at providing mental health resources for men in Umuahia North.
The program will include free counseling services, mental health workshops, and awareness campaigns tailored to the needs of men.
The lawmaker also called on other leaders and stakeholders to prioritize mental health policies, stating that a holistic approach to governance includes addressing the emotional and psychological well-being of citizens.
International Men’s Day is celebrated annually on November 19 to promote positive male role models, improve gender relations, and advocate for men’s health.
Hon. Akaliro’s leadership continues to resonate with his constituents, as he pledges to champion the causes that uplift the community.
His commemoration of International Men’s Day serves as a reminder of the need for compassion and action to address the mental health challenges faced by men in Umuahia North, Abia State and Nigeria at large.
