President IWU, Amb Mishak Nnanta Calls For Urgent Electoral Reform, Accountability; Says Nigeria needs a Renewed Democracy

November 2, 2024 –
The President of the Igbo World Union (IWU), Amb. Sir Dr Mishak Nnanta (KJW, Ksm, JP), Gburugburu Ndigbo Dum, has voiced deep concerns about the state of democracy in Nigeria, citing increasing threats that undermine the country’s political system and calling for immediate electoral reforms

In his statement, Mishak Nnanta emphasized the urgent need for measures to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy and restore public trust.

According to him, Nigeria’s democratic process has come under significant pressure due to widespread reports of electoral irregularities, voter intimidation, and lack of transparency in recent elections.
Democracy in Nigeria is under siege,” he stated, “and if we don’t act decisively, we risk eroding the foundational principles that our nation stands on.”

Amb Nnanta underscored the IWU's commitment to advancing democratic values across Nigeria and protecting the rights of all Nigerians.
This is not just a call for one group or one region,” he said, “but a clarion call for all Nigerians to safeguard our democracy.”

The IWU President outlined key areas requiring immediate attention. He advocated for comprehensive electoral reforms that include measures to ensure transparency, accountability, and fairness at every stage of the electoral process.
Additionally, he urged political leaders to promote accountability and foster a culture where the rule of law prevails over political interests.

His Imperial Majesty also called for stringent measures to hold accountable those involved in electoral malpractice.
No one should be above the law,” he said. “Our democracy can only thrive if individuals and institutions involved in violations of electoral integrity are held responsible for their actions.”

The statement from the Igbo World Union echoes concerns shared by several civil society organizations and international observers who have been critical of recent developments in Nigeria’s democratic landscape. Observers have pointed to incidents of ballot tampering, violence at polling stations, and undue influence by political figures as factors contributing to the public’s diminishing confidence in the system.

Gburugburu Ndigbo Dum called on Nigerians from all walks of life to join in advocating for these necessary reforms, noting that a collective effort is needed to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
Our voices must be united in this call for change. This is a fight to preserve the democratic values that we hold dear, for ourselves and for future generations,” he concluded.

As Council Elections are being held in different states, and as Nigeria prepares for upcoming elections, the call from influential leaders like Sir Mishak Nnanta may set the stage for widespread dialogue on safeguarding democratic processes, a crucial step to rebuilding trust in Nigeria's electoral system
