Umuahia, Abia State —
Barrister Anderson Akaliro, member representing Umuahia North Constituency in Abia State House of Assembly, has championed an initiative aimed at addressing food security and hunger within his constituency by revitalizing the Ulonna Farm Settlement.
His efforts have led to increased government attention to agriculture-based solutions as a means of empowering rural communities and ensuring food availability for local families.
The Ulonna Farm Settlement, located within Akaliro’s constituency, has long been recognized for its potential to boost agricultural productivity in Abia State.
Through his leadership, Akaliro has brought the state government’s focus back to this critical sector, urging officials to invest in infrastructure and resources that would support both subsistence and commercial farming.
"Addressing hunger begins with empowering our farmers and enhancing food production," Hon Akaliro said.
"The Ulonna Farm Settlement is a key opportunity for sustainable agricultural development, and I am calling on the government to provide the necessary attention and resources to make this happen."
This advocacy aligns with Abia State’s broader goals of reducing poverty and creating employment, especially among youth and women in rural areas.
By focusing on agricultural reform and capacity-building in settlements like Ulonna, Akaliro envisions a community where the local economy is strengthened, and residents can sustain themselves through farming.
Since taking office, Akaliro has been active in his mission to support local agriculture, organizing meetings with stakeholders and engaging with local farmers to understand their needs.
His recent push has prompted state leaders to explore funding opportunities and technical support for initiatives that could transform the Ulonna settlement into a model for other regions within Abia.
Akaliro’s work is expected to catalyze positive change in Umuahia North, sparking renewed interest in agriculture as both a means of livelihood and a tool for hunger alleviation in Abia State.
