Umuahia, Abia State —
The member representing Umuahia South Constituency and Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Emeka Tommy Obioma, has called on parents and guardians in his constituency to take full advantage of the Abia State Government's newly implemented Free Basic Education scheme.
The initiative, set to begin in January 2025, is aimed at ensuring that every child in the state has access to basic education.
Speaking to newsmen on Thursday, Hon. Obioma emphasized the significance of the scheme, describing it as a transformative opportunity for families across Abia.
He highlighted the state government’s commitment to uplifting educational standards and removing financial barriers for parents, especially for economically disadvantaged families.
Obioma stated, “Education is not only a right but also the foundation of a prosperous future. With this scheme, the Govt is not only investing in individual children but also in the collective progress of our state.”
Obioma also reminded his constituents of the Abia State Child’s Right Law of 2006, which mandates that every child must receive basic education. He also didn't relent in reminding them of the legal consequences for parents who fail to comply.
According to Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu,
"As part of the state’s enforcement efforts, the law will be strictly upheld starting January 1, 2025.
Parents who neglect their responsibilities in this regard will face prosecution under the law." He also underscored the government’s commitment to educational reform at a recent press briefing.
Obioma, on his part, encouraged parents to recognize the long-term value of the scheme, stressing that the benefits extend beyond the immediate relief of tuition expenses.
"This initiative not only ensures free access to education up to junior secondary level but also seeks to equip our children with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving world,” he remarked.
The legislator further urged local leaders, school administrators, and community organizations to raise awareness about the scheme and to assist in creating a smooth transition for parents and students alike.
With the Abia State Government’s renewed focus on educational reforms and the determined advocacy from leaders like Emeka Obioma, there is growing optimism that the Free Basic Education program will make a lasting impact on communities throughout the state.
