Umuahia, Abia State —
The representative of Umuahia South state constituency, Hon. Emeka Obioma has highlighted his unwavering passion for ensuring access to clean water for constituents.
This advocacy stems from a deep understanding of the transformative power clean water holds for improving lives, fostering economic growth, and promoting public health.
Speaking to newsmen in Umuahia, the Legislator outlined the critical challenges facing the area regarding water access.
"Access to clean and safe water is a fundamental human right," he began.
"In Umuahia South, many families still rely on unsafe water sources, leading to health issues and reduced productivity. It is my mission to change this narrative and ensure every household has access to this basic necessity."
For years, communities in Umuahia South have grappled with water scarcity, relying on streams, rainwater, and shallow wells, many of which are contaminated.
The resulting health crises, including outbreaks of waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid, have further strained the local healthcare system.
"The lack of clean water doesn't just affect health—it affects education and livelihoods," the Umuahia South rep emphasized.
"Children, especially girls, often miss school because they have to fetch water for their families. This perpetuates cycles of poverty and limits opportunities for growth."
To address these challenges, the Emeka Obioma has developed a comprehensive plan to improve water infrastructure across the constituency.
This plan includes embarking on Borehole water projects in several communities in Umuahia South.
Under the Hon Obioma’s leadership, several communities in Umuahia South have already begun to experience the benefits of these initiative. The borehole projects in communities such as Amibo, Ohiya, Itaja Ehere have since been completed and already in use. While said projects are still ongoing and hopefully will be completed by the end of the month in Ogbodiukwu and Ubakala communities.
The Lawmaker called on stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private sector actors, to join hands in the fight for clean water access.
"This is not just my fight—it is a collective responsibility. Together, we can transform Umuahia South into a model community where no one has to suffer because of water scarcity," he said.
Hon Emeka Obioma’s commitment to clean water access reflects a broader vision for sustainable development in Umuahia South.
Beyond water, he aims to tackle other infrastructure gaps, including health, education, and sanitation.
"As a leader, my greatest joy comes from seeing the smiles of my constituents when their lives are improved. Clean water is only the beginning; it’s a stepping stone to a brighter future for all of us."
