Abia Lawmaker, Anderson Akaliro Backs Tinubu’s Tax Reforms, Says It's Critical for National Growth

December 3, 2024 —

The member representing Umuahia North (Ohuhu) State Constituency in Abia House of Assembly, Hon. Barr Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, has voiced his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills, describing the initiative as a vital step toward strengthening Nigeria’s economic framework.

In a statement issued earlier today, Akaliro emphasized the importance of tax reforms, labeling them a "critical issue" in the country’s developmental journey.
He affirmed that there is no harm in pursuing such reforms, as they are essential for enhancing revenue generation, reducing fiscal dependence, and fostering equitable growth.

Tax reform is a critical issue, and there is nothing wrong with pursuing it,” Akaliro stated.
It is a necessary move to ensure that Nigeria’s tax system becomes more efficient and equitable, ultimately driving sustainable development.”

The Tinubu administration has been championing a series of economic reforms, including restructuring the tax system to address inefficiencies, expand the tax base, and improve compliance.
While the initiative has garnered mixed reactions from stakeholders, Akaliro’s statement adds a strong voice to the growing support for the reforms within political circles.

Experts believe that the proposed tax reforms could significantly impact the nation’s revenue generation capabilities, particularly at a time when Nigeria faces fiscal challenges and seeks to diversify its economy away from oil dependence.

Akaliro urged Nigerians to remain patient and open-minded as the government works toward implementing measures designed to benefit the nation in the long term.

The tax reform bills are expected to be deliberated upon in the National Assembly in the coming weeks, with debates likely to focus on their potential economic and social implications.
