Article: The Role of the Opposition in a Parliamentary System - Hon. Barr. Anderson Akaliro

In every democratic system, particularly those operating under a parliamentary framework, the opposition plays a crucial role in ensuring good governance and accountability.

As a member of the Abia State House of Assembly, I have come to appreciate the indispensable function of a strong, vibrant, and focused opposition in driving the democratic process forward.

The opposition represents an alternative voice to the ruling government. It is the cornerstone of checks and balances, acting as a watchdog over the executive and other arms of government.
By scrutinizing policies, legislation, and decisions, the opposition ensures that the government remains transparent, accountable, and responsive to the needs of the people.

Without a strong opposition, the risk of unchecked power arises, potentially leading to authoritarian tendencies, corruption, and poor governance.
The opposition provides a necessary counterweight to the ruling party, ensuring that no single entity dominates the political landscape.

Key Roles of the Opposition

1. Holding the Government Accountable
The opposition ensures that the government fulfills its promises and adheres to the principles of justice and fairness.
Through debates, parliamentary questions, and constructive criticism, it highlights areas where the government may have fallen short.
This creates an environment where those in power are compelled to justify their actions and policies to the electorate.

2. Legislative Oversight
The opposition scrutinizes proposed legislation to ensure that it aligns with public interest.
By proposing amendments, rejecting harmful bills, or advocating for progressive laws, the opposition helps maintain a legislative framework that promotes the welfare of the people.

3. Representing Alternative Perspectives
The opposition reflects the diverse views of the populace, particularly those not represented by the ruling party. It champions minority rights, marginalized communities, and alternative policy ideas that enrich national discourse.

4. Promoting Transparency
By exposing corruption, inefficiency, and misconduct, the opposition serves as a deterrent to abuse of power. Investigative reporting, public inquiries, and petitions are tools that the opposition uses to bring issues to light and demand accountability.

5. Providing a Government-in-Waiting
The opposition is not just about criticism; it also offers a credible alternative to the electorate. By presenting viable policies and demonstrating leadership competence, the opposition positions itself as a potential successor to the ruling party.

Despite its critical role, the opposition often faces numerous challenges, particularly in developing democracies like Nigeria.
These challenges include limited access to resources, harassment or suppression by the ruling government, and internal divisions. Additionally, the absence of issue-based politics sometimes weakens the opposition's ability to constructively engage the government.

To be effective, the opposition must remain united and focused on national interest rather than personal or partisan agendas.
Constructive engagement with the government, rather than baseless antagonism, strengthens its credibility. Furthermore, leveraging modern technology, media, and grassroots mobilization can amplify its voice and influence.

A vibrant opposition is a hallmark of a healthy democracy.
It ensures that governments remain accountable, policies are inclusive, and the rights of citizens are protected.
As representatives of the people, it is our collective responsibility—whether in the ruling party or the opposition—to uphold the tenets of democracy and work tirelessly for the betterment of society.

In Abia State, we must continue to strengthen our opposition to ensure that democracy delivers on its promise of good governance and societal progress.
A strong opposition is not a threat to democracy but a vital pillar of its survival.
