A viral video circulating on social media on Wednesday captured students of the Delta State School of Nursing rejecting Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, as their “mother” during her visit to the state.
Oluremi Tinubu was in Delta State as part of her Renewed Hope Initiative project. During her visit, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori praised her efforts, stating that the nation was experiencing a significant transformation in the health sector.
He commended the First Lady for her dedication to improving the lives of ordinary Nigerians, citing the impact of RHI since its inception in 2023.
As part of the event, professional kits were presented to the wives of South-South governors, who serve as RHI coordinators in their respective states.
The First Lady also visited the Traditional Rulers’ Council Chambers, where she met with monarchs, including the Orodje of Okpe, retired Major General Felix Mujak Peruo.
However, a moment from the event sparked widespread social media reactions.
In the viral clip, the event’s Master of Ceremony introduced Oluremi Tinubu as “everyone’s mother,” a common title for First Ladies.
The nursing students, however, refused to accept this designation.
When the MC declared, “Na our mama be this” (translated as “This is our mother”), the students responded in unison, “Na your mama be this” (translated as “This is your mother”), signalling their rejection of the title.
While the students’ exact reason for rejecting the First Lady as their “mother” remains unclear, the incident comes amid widespread discontent over the economic hardship and insecurity plaguing Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
