Abia State, Nigeria – June 17, 2025
As the 2027 general elections gradually inch closer, former Abia State governorship candidate, Akym Onyekwere Uche, has declared his full confidence in the administration of Gov. Alex Otti, describing the incumbent leader as “a man on a mission who is delivering real progress to the people of Abia.”
Speaking in Umuahia during a media interaction on Monday, Akym Onyekwere, who contested on a reform-driven agenda in the last gubernatorial elections, said that Gov Otti has lived up to the expectations of many Abians, including those who once stood against him politically.
“Let me be clear,” Akym stated, “Dr Alex Otti is not only performing, he is exceeding expectations. What he is doing today across infrastructure, health, civil service reform and economic management is exactly what I envisioned for Abia. I have no doubt, he is good to go for 2027.”
The former guber hopeful said he was compelled to speak out based on the visible transformation happening across the state, noting that the governor’s projects have touched both urban and rural communities in a balanced and progressive way.
“From the reconstruction of major roads to the prompt payment of workers' salaries, you can see the hand of genuine leadership at work,” he continued.
“For someone who once aspired to govern this state, it gives me peace to see someone else doing what I would have done, maybe even better. That is what leadership is about, placing the interest of the people first.”
Akym, who is now a strong advocate for Public-Private Partnership (PPP) development models, said Gov Otti’s openness to private sector participation and investment-friendly reforms are crucial steps toward unlocking Abia’s full economic potential.
“I have always believed that Abia’s growth depends on bold reforms and effective collaboration between government and the private sector. Gov Alex Otti is implementing that vision already. From the modernization of Aba to fiscal reforms in Umuahia, the indicators are all pointing in the right direction,” he noted.
When asked whether he has any political ambitions ahead of 2027, Akym waved aside personal interests, emphasizing that “for now, what Abia needs is continuity.”
“If we disrupt the progress we’re seeing now, it would be to our collective disadvantage. Leadership is not about ego. It’s about results. For me, 2027 should be about consolidating the gains we’ve made. And Alex Otti, from every indication, is good to go,” Akym declared.
