Hon Emeka Obioma Sunday Nuggets: Standing Out for the Right Reasons

Proverbs 22:29 – “Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men.”

In a world driven by competition, popularity, and a desire for recognition, it is important to reflect on why we seek to stand out.  Proverbs 22:29 reminds us that it is not fame, noise, or self-promotion that truly elevates a person, but skill, diligence, and excellence in one’s work. When our pursuit of excellence is rooted in integrity and purpose, we naturally distinguish ourselves in a way that honors God and uplifts others.

Standing out for the right reasons begins with developing our God-given talents. Everyone has been uniquely gifted by God, and when we commit to refining those gifts through hard work, discipline, and learning, we begin to shine. Joseph stood out in Potiphar’s house, not because he sought attention, but because he applied wisdom, responsibility, and integrity to every task he was given (Genesis 39:2-4). His diligence opened doors that no man could shut.

However, excellence alone is not enough, character must accompany competence. There are many skilled individuals who fail because their hearts are not upright. True elevation comes when skill is married to humility, honesty, and faithfulness. Daniel distinguished himself among the admini strators  in Babylon because of his“excellent spirit” (Daniel 6:3). His commitment to righteousness, even in exile, made him stand out not only in work but in moral courage.

One of the greatest dangers today is the temptation to seek attention for the wrong reasons, through manipulation, compromise, or self-promotion. But Jesus taught a better way; “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Our goal should not be to glorify ourselves, but to reflect God’s goodness through the quality of our lives and work.

Furthermore, when we pursue excellence with the right heart, we attract divine favor and opportunities. The Bible assures us that those who are faithful in little will be entrusted with much (Luke 16:10). Whether you are a student, artisan, leader, or entrepreneur, if you carry out your role with dedication and faith, God will bring visibility, honor, and reward in His time.

Standing out also positions us to influence others for good. When people observe integrity, patience, excellence, and grace in us, we become a testimony of God’s wisdom at work. Nehemiah’s leadership stood out in a broken city because he combined prayer, planning, and perseverance. His distinction brought revival and restoration to Jerusalem (Nehemiah 2–6).

Ultimately, standing out for the right reasons is a form of worship. It is living our lives as unto the Lord, offering our best as an expression of gratitude and stewardship. Colossians 3:23 reminds us, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” When we make God our audience, we are more concerned about faithfulness than fame.

In conclusion, being noticed is not the goal, being faithful is. When we commit to standing out through godly excellence, sincere humility, and steadfast purpose, we bring glory to God and make a meaningful impact. Like the man in Proverbs 22:29, we will find ourselves serving before kings, not because we chased greatness, but because we honored God with our work.
