Abia State, Nigeria - June 6, 2025

Hon. Obi Aguocha, the Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has called on student leaders across Abia State to embrace integrity, discipline, and purpose-driven leadership.

He made this call as the Special Guest of Honour at the 2025 Inauguration Ceremony of the National Association of Nigerian Students Joint Campus Council (NANS-JCC), Abia State Chapter, held at the College of Basic Nursing, Amachara.

Themed “Repositioning Students’ Leadership for Unity, Decency, Transparency, and Progressive Advocacy,” the event brought together a vibrant assembly of student leaders, academic stakeholders, and political figures, united by a shared vision of empowering student leadership and promoting responsible advocacy.

In his keynote address, Hon. Aguocha challenged the newly inaugurated student executives to rise above mediocrity and set a standard for excellence.

Student leadership must reflect the best of our values. You are not just leaders in name, but stewards of the trust placed in you by your peers,” he said. “Let your leadership be marked by discipline, vision, and accountability. Use your platforms not for disruption, but for constructive dialogue and development.”

He highlighted several of his youth-centered programs as practical examples of leadership with impact. Among them are scholarships for 750 students across the federal constituency, ICT training and financial empowerment for 150 youths, and the payment of reparation fees for Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) students, covering all political wards within Ikwuano/Umuahia North/South.

These interventions are not handouts, but investments in your future. We are building a society where education is not a privilege for a few, but a right for all,” Aguocha noted.

When we equip our young people with knowledge and skills, we prepare them to take charge of tomorrow.”

The lawmaker’s address resonated strongly with the audience, many of whom applauded his active involvement in youth affairs and commitment to grassroots development.

Student leaders who spoke at the event described Aguocha as a “true friend of the students,” with several urging continued collaboration between student bodies and public officials to address educational challenges and promote civic responsibility.

The inauguration also featured goodwill messages from education administrators and the formal swearing-in of the NANS-JCC Abia 2025 leadership team, who pledged to uphold the association’s ideals of unity, decency, transparency, and progressive advocacy.

The event closed on a high note, with Hon. Aguocha reaffirming his support for youth development and urging students to be “torchbearers of a new Nigeria.”
