Prominent Nigerians have chided the House of Representatives over the recent introduction of a bill to establish a National Commission for Renewed Hope Agenda Trust Fund.
The bill, sponsored by the House Deputy Majority Whip, Isiaka Ibrahim (APC, Ogun) seeks to create a trust fund for the implementation of infrastructural projects as contained in the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Introduced during last week Wednesday’s plenary, the proposed legislation has elicited criticisms from many Nigerians, some of whom questioned the relevance of such a commission.
“They’re taking this partisanship nonsense too far. What’s a party political programme, which should ordinarily be founded on policy, doing with a bill proposed in the House?” he asked.
Similarly, a political affairs analyst and member of the All Progressives Congress, Jackson Ojo, described the bill as an indication of how bad things have turned in Nigeria.
Speaking with our correspondent, the Port Harcourt-based analyst said, “Nigeria is already tilting towards an autocratic system of government.
When you look at the National Assembly now, the principle of checks and balances have been completely eroded.
“The ruling party no longer needs two-thirds majority to have its way. They don’t need the support of the opposition anymore. This portends serious danger to our democratic future because in the absence of democracy, any other form of government will have a semblance of autocracy.
“For the House to even contemplate a commission on the principle of a single man is worrisome.”
