In a strong and timely call for values-driven governance, Entrepreneur and philanthropist, Onyekwere Akym Uche (OAU), has urged all public office holders at local, state, and national levels to recommit themselves to people-oriented leadership, reminding them that true service lies in prioritizing the welfare, dignity, and needs of the citizens.
Speaking to National Sunrise, Akym emphasized that leadership is not about status or personal gain but about stewardship and sacrificial service to the people.
He stated that the growing disconnect between some elected leaders and the people they serve is at the heart of many societal frustrations.
"When people elect you, they entrust you with their hopes, needs, and collective aspirations," Akym said.
"As leaders, we must always ask ourselves; Are we truly putting the people first? Every decision, every project, and every policy must be measured by its impact on the common man."
Onyekwere Akym Uche, known for his consistent advocacy on good governance and grassroots inclusion, challenged public officials to rise above politics and focus on real developmental change.
He stressed the need for listening leadership, leaders who stay in touch with community voices and respond with action, not excuses.
"It is not enough to build roads or commission projects. Are our people empowered? Are they safe? Are they eating? Are their children going to school? These are the real measures of leadership success," he said.
He noted that while many leaders begin with good intentions, distractions of office and political pressures often derail their focus. He called on such leaders to return to their roots and reconnect with the people who gave them the mandate.
"Let us never forget that power belongs to the people. They do not serve us, we serve them. And leadership without empathy is dangerous," Akym cautioned.
OAU also highlighted the role of accountability, transparency, and constant communication as key ingredients for people-first leadership. He encouraged regular town hall meetings, constituency feedback channels, and proactive governance models that elevate the voices of the marginalized.
"This generation is watching. The youth are aware, the elderly are hopeful, and the poor are desperate. Public service must reflect urgency and compassion," Akym noted. "We can no longer afford leadership that is aloof, transactional, or self-serving."
As Nigeria continues to grapple with economic hardship and institutional challenges, Onyekwere Akym’s message joins a growing movement of concerned citizens calling for transformative leadership that is anchored on integrity, humility, and public-centered priorities.
In conclusion, Akym left a charge to all current and aspiring public office holders,
"Let your legacy be love in action, not headlines, not handshakes, but impact. The people are watching, history is recording, and posterity will judge. Always put the people first."
