Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has paid glowing tributes to former President Muhammadu Buhari and the late Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona (Ogbagba II), describing them as unwavering champions of peace, unity, and national stability.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, Bamidele lauded the legacies of both leaders who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025 — Buhari at 82 and Oba Adetona at 91.
The Senate Leader said the duo served their fatherland with patriotism and distinction, noting that their demise is not only a loss to their families and communities but also to Nigeria, West Africa, and the global Black community.
“Buhari, as Military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985, epitomised discipline, personal integrity and strong leadership.
He led a principled fight against public malfeasance and championed efforts to reposition the country on the path of justice and rectitude,” Bamidele said.
Reflecting on Buhari’s political journey in the Fourth Republic, the senator recounted how the former president aligned with progressive forces across Nigeria to challenge entrenched conservative interests.
He highlighted Buhari’s presidential campaigns under the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party, his role in forming the Congress for Progressive Change, and his eventual coalition with other progressives to establish the All Progressives Congress, which won power in 2015.
