the Bauchi State Government has directed contractors handling school projects across the state to incorporate tree planting into their construction work as part of efforts to combat climate change and promote a conducive learning environment.
The call was made by the Director, School Services of the Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board, Rabiu Usman, during the 2024 UBEC/SUBEB intervention contract bid opening ceremony held on Wednesday in Bauchi.
“A school needs to be a conducive environment for learning, and one of the things that makes a school conducive is tree planting,” Usman said.
He explained that trees would not only provide shade but also help regulate temperature and improve environmental sustainability in schools.
I asked all the contractors to see it as very important and to plant trees immediately they start the foundation so that as they are building, the trees will be growing. Before the end of the project, we would have achieved what we wanted to achieve,” he added.
Also speaking, the Executive Chairman of BASUBEB, Adamu Muhammad, said the ceremony was aimed at ensuring transparency, due process, and accountability in the execution of projects under the year’s intervention.
Represented by the board’s Permanent Secretary, Abdulhamid Jibrin, the chairman, commended Governor Bala Mohammed and the Executive Secretary of UBEC for the timely provision of counterpart funds for project execution in the state.
“I believe today’s occasion aims at observing due process in project execution and educating stakeholders on its significance in line with the governor’s policy to provide a befitting teaching and learning environment in the state,” he said.
He urged contractors to adhere strictly to project specifications, warning that the board would not compromise on standards.
On his part, the Director of Physical Planning, BASUBEB, Adamu Abdullahi, lauded the turnout of bidders, describing it as a sign of commitment to delivering quality work that could stand the test of time.
According to him, the move would further strengthen the basic education sub-sector and raise it to greater heights in the state.
