Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara attended his first Sunday church service since his reinstatement.
According to a video on Channels TV, Fubara was accompanied by his wife, Valerie, and a cross-section of stakeholders, as he worshipped at Saint Paul’s Anglican Church in his hometown of Opobo, Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area.
The Governor said his purpose was a quiet expression of gratitude for what he described as God’s faithfulness to his family, the state, and the nation.
He also used the occasion of International Day of Peace to thank his worshippers for their prayers and to urge calm as his administration resumes work.
The service comes after the lifting of a federal state of emergency in Rivers State.
President Bola Tinubu in March ordered emergency rule following political instability that ensued as a result of a clash between Fubara and his predecessor, FCT minister, Nyesom Wike.
After his reinstatement, on Friday, Fubara described the emergency rule period as “enormously challenging” but said he willingly abided by the declaration to allow room for peace to be restored.
“As your governor, I accepted to abide by the state of emergency declaration and chose to cooperate with Mr President and the National Assembly, guided by my conviction that the sacrifice was not too great to secure peace, stability, and progress of Rivers State.
“This was why I also resisted the pressure to challenge the constitutionality of the declaration of the state of emergency, the suspension of democratic institutions and all other actions that we endured during the difficult period,” he said.
