The Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has mourned the killing of no fewer than 12 persons, including the Baale of Ogbayo, during Sunday morning’s gunmen attack on Oke-Ode community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state.

This followed the confirmation of the attack by the state police command, which stated that the incident occurred around 7 a.m. when armed men stormed the Ogbayo area of Oke-Ode, shooting sporadically and targeting members of the local vigilante.

A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said operatives of the command and personnel of the National Forest Security Service swiftly responded to distress calls, but 12 vigilante members were already found dead.

The statement added that four injured victims were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were evacuated.

“At about 7:00 a.m. today, armed men invaded the Ogbayo area of Oke-Ode, shooting sporadically.

“A combined team of police operatives and members of the National Forest Security Service responded swiftly to the scene, where they discovered 12 lifeless bodies of vigilante members, including the Baale of Ogbayo,” the statement partly read.

Ejire-Adeyemi noted that the police, in collaboration with the military and NFSS, had intensified manhunt operations to track down the perpetrators, assuring residents that justice would be served.

The Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, while commiserating with families of the victims, described the killings as “heinous” and pledged the command’s unwavering commitment to the safety of lives and property across the state.

Meanwhile, Governor AbdulRazaq has called for increased security deployments to the state following Sunday’s deadly attacks in Oke-Ode, Ifelodun Local Government Area.

In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, the governor described the incident as “unfortunate,” stressing that the state required more military support to roll back the activities of criminals in parts of Kwara South and North.

He expressed deep sorrow over the killings, noting that the forest guards and hunters had put up a spirited resistance against the bandits out of patriotism and love for their communities.

“My heartfelt condolences go to the families. No word can adequately capture the depth of my sadness, and nothing can compensate the bereaved families over these incidents, in spite of our efforts and the investments in enlisting and training the forest guards to bolster the conventional forces,” the statement read.

The governor acknowledged public concerns about rising insecurity and assured residents of his administration’s commitment to working with federal security agencies to restore peace.

“While we appreciate the efforts and unquantifiable sacrifices of the security forces as well as the successes so far, we definitely need to do a lot more until we are completely out of the woods,” he added.
