The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest of a notorious Ifeanyi Eze Okorienta, popularly known as Gentle de Yahoo.
Okorienta, long feared across parts of Imo and neighboring states for his alleged role in violent attacks, kidnappings, and extortion, was apprehended at his hideout in Aku-Ihube, Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State. The successful operation was carried out by troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade in conjunction with operatives of other security agencies.
According to a statement released by the Nigerian Army, the raid yielded significant recoveries, including one English pistol, 120 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 25 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, a cartridge, six mobile phones, military and police uniforms, and a German flag believed to have been used as a symbol of intimidation.
Military sources described the capture of Gentle de Yahoo as a “major breakthrough” in the fight against insecurity in the Southeast. Security officials said his arrest was not only a blow to IPOB/ESN operations but also a much-needed relief for residents of Okigwe and adjoining communities who have suffered incessant attacks linked to his syndicate.
Over the past year, communities in Imo and neighboring states have come under repeated assaults from armed gangs suspected to be loyal to IPOB/ESN. These incidents, ranging from the ambush of security personnel to the burning of public infrastructure and the abduction of civilians for ransom, had heightened fear and crippled socio-economic activities in the region.
“The arrest of Okorienta marks a significant victory in the ongoing effort to restore law and order in the Southeast,” a senior military officer who participated in the operation disclosed. “This man has been on our watchlist for a long time. His activities disrupted lives, commerce, and security in Imo and beyond. Neutralizing his influence will no doubt restore confidence among residents.”
The Army reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining counter-insurgency and anti-criminality campaigns in the Southeast until all pockets of resistance are dismantled. It also urged members of the public to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing credible intelligence on the activities of criminal elements in their communities.
For residents of Okigwe and its environs, the fall of Gentle de Yahoo is being seen as the beginning of respite after months of tension. Locals expressed cautious optimism that the arrest will pave the way for lasting peace in the troubled region.
