Oyo APC youth group slams Makinde’s presidential ambition

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress Youth League has accused Governor Seyi Makinde of the People’s Democratic Party of abandoning governance for what it described as an “unrealistic presidential ambition”.

Makinde has been touted as one of the aspirants eyeing the PDP presidential ticket in 2027 from the South.

However, the Oyo State Coordinator of the APC Youth League, Ayobami Dagilogba, said in a statement released on Friday that Makinde is pursuing an unrealistic ambition.

He alleged that Makinde was frittering away resources on personal political pursuits, citing his recent distribution of cars to selected persons in the state, which it described as a “Father Christmas” gesture that stood in sharp contrast with the state’s developmental challenges.

“Despite being in office, no model schools have been built, depriving students of quality education. The exodus of medical personnel from government hospitals has compromised healthcare delivery, leaving citizens to suffer. The lack of local government autonomy has stifled grassroots development, while farmers struggle to access support and resources.

“Meanwhile, Governor Makinde’s pursuit of his unrealistic presidential ambitions has raised questions about his priorities. The recent distribution of multimillion-dollar cars to his cronies, dubbed “Father Christmas”, has sparked outrage and perceptions of misplaced priorities. This act of extravagance starkly contrasts with the state’s developmental challenges.

The people of Oyo State deserve better governance, and it’s essential for leaders to prioritise their needs and welfare. The PDP government’s performance under Governor Makinde’s leadership has fallen short of expectations, and citizens are demanding change,” the statement read.

The youth group urged the inclusion of young people in party governance, describing their energy and creativity as crucial to repositioning the APC for victory in 2027.

The group aso urged genuine reconciliation among aggrieved members, cautioning against attitudes or statements that could hinder the peace process, and insisted that only a level playing field and internal democracy would strengthen the party ahead of the elections.

“At this critical juncture, it is imperative for APC in Oyo State to unite and build a formidable front ahead of 2027. We cannot continue along the same path as in the past while expecting different results. The APC in Oyo State has both the structure and capacity to consign the PDP-led administration to political oblivion, but not while internal crises continue to weaken our prospects.

These challenges must be addressed sincerely by relevant stakeholders. We must revisit past mistakes, learn genuine lessons, and focus on strengthening the party rather than promoting narrow, individual interests.

“The APC must guarantee free and fair internal democracy ahead of the 2027 elections. Any attempt at imposition in Oyo State will weaken our party and undermine its strength,” the youth league warned.

Dagilogba also announced plans to hold a Tinubu Loyalty Walk on October 4, to demonstrate solidarity with President Bola Tinubu and the progressive family.
