The Akwa Ibom State Government has urged community leaders, teachers, and students of Community Secondary School, Iko Town, in the Eastern Obolo Local Government Area, to protect and maintain the newly renovated school facilities to ensure their sustainability.
The call came after the Vcare for Development Foundation, in partnership with Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited, completed major upgrades at the school, according to a statement issued on Sunday, signed by VDF management.
The project included the renovation of 18 classrooms in four blocks, eight offices, a library block, the construction of male and female toilet facilities, the rehabilitation of two boreholes, and the installation of solar power.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ubong Essien Umoh, who represented the state government at the commissioning, praised the intervention but stressed the importance of community ownership.
These facilities must be safeguarded and maintained. I urge the school management, teachers, and community leaders to take ownership of this project. Only then can we sustain the benefits of this initiative, which aligns with His Excellency Pastor Umo Eno’s Arise Agenda,” Umoh said.
Executive Chairman of the State Secondary Education Board, Dr. Ekaete Okon, echoed the call, charging teachers to maximise the new infrastructure to improve teaching and learning outcomes.
The school principal, Dr. Ekerette Akpan, and student leaders expressed gratitude for the intervention but appealed for further support, especially the construction of a drainage system to address flooding on the premises.
The initiative, implemented under VCDF’s Model School Initiative, underscores SEEPCO’s commitment to supporting education in rural communities through its environmental, social, and governance programmes.
