Umuahia, Abia State |September 16, 2025 —
In a major political shake-up that further unsettles the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, the Member representing Umuahia North State Constituency and Chairman, House Committee on Public Petitions and Judiciary, Hon. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, has officially resigned from the party.
In a strongly-worded resignation letter dated September 2025 and addressed to the APC Chairman of Umuahia North Local Government Area, Hon. Akaliro lamented what he described as the irreparable collapse of internal cohesion within the party. He said his decision followed wide consultations with his constituents and political allies who urged him to take a step that would guarantee effective representation.
According to him, the APC had long ceased to function as a unified platform in Abia State.
“Since my inauguration as a member of the Abia State House of Assembly, the party has never invited me, formally or informally to any meeting or activity,” Akaliro stated.
“This deliberate exclusion is not just an affront to me personally but an insult to the people of Umuahia North who entrusted me with their mandate.”
He further decried the endless crises rocking the party across the state, citing suspensions and counter-suspensions of party executives at different levels as a sign of total breakdown.
“The APC in Abia has become a house divided against itself. Factionalization, leadership collapse, and toxic infighting have crippled the party beyond repair,” he said.
“I cannot continue to operate within a structure that undermines both my relevance and the aspirations of my constituents.”
Declaring his alignment with Gov. Alex Otti’s Labour Party-led administration, Hon. Akaliro praised the governor’s leadership style and vision for the state.
“Dr Alex Otti has demonstrated visionary and development-oriented leadership. His reforms are people-focused, and his administration has rekindled the hope of Abians. I have decided to stand with progress, and that is why I am aligning with the Labour Party to support his mission of rebuilding our state,” he explained.
The lawmaker, who was the only elected APC member in the Abia State House of Assembly during the 2023 general elections, stressed that his defection was an act of principle. “My loyalty is to my people, not to a fractured political structure. I cannot remain in a party that treats its elected representatives with disdain while failing to provide a sense of direction for our state,” he emphasized.
Political observers have described Akaliro’s move as a heavy blow to the APC in Abia and a boost for the Labour Party’s growing dominance under Gov Otti.
