In commomeraton of World Democracy Day on Monday, September 15, former Abia governorship candidate, philanthropist and founder of the OAU Foundation, Onyekwere Akym Uche (OAU), emphasized that true democracy can only flourish when accountability and citizen empowerment remain at the heart of governance.

Speaking with our correspondent in Umuahia, OAU described democracy as more than just periodic elections, stressing that it must translate into tangible benefits for the people. He noted that for societies to prosper, leaders must consistently uphold transparency, equity, and fairness.

Democracy is not complete without accountability. Leaders must see themselves as servants of the people, not masters,” OAU said.
Every decision taken in government should have the welfare of the people at its core. When leaders are accountable, trust is built, and when trust exists, democracy becomes stronger.”

OAU further highlighted that citizen empowerment is essential to sustaining democratic values. He explained that democracy thrives where citizens are given access to education, opportunities for entrepreneurship, and platforms for meaningful participation in governance.

A democracy that neglects the people’s empowerment is a democracy built on shaky ground,” he stated.
We must create systems that give citizens the tools to succeed, particularly the youth who are the future custodians of our democracy.”

The OAU Foundation, which has supported small businesses and provided educational assistance to underprivileged communities, was cited as a practical demonstration of OAU’s belief in people-centered development.
He noted that empowering citizens economically and socially ensures that democracy goes beyond rhetoric to real-life impact.

Through initiatives like the OAU Foundation, we are showing that democracy must have a human face,” OAU explained. “When young people are educated, when families can put food on their tables, when businesses can grow without unnecessary obstacles, then democracy becomes meaningful.”

Marking the occasion, OAU also called on Nigerians to protect the nation’s democratic space through active participation, respect for diversity, and constructive engagement.
He urged citizens not to lose faith in democracy despite its challenges, but to keep pushing for reforms that reflect the will of the people.

Democracy may not be perfect, but it remains the best system to ensure freedom and justice. Let us all contribute our voices and actions to safeguard it for generations to come,” OAU concluded.

International Day of Democracy is observed globally every September 15 to promote democratic principles, citizen participation, and the rule of law.
