The Member representing Umuahia North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to community development during a visit to the Afor Umuda Market in Umuda Ofeme, which he recently rebuilt and revived after many years of neglect.
Hon. Akaliro’s visit was marked by joyful scenes as traders and residents of the community warmly received him, expressing deep gratitude for restoring the once moribund market to a vibrant economic center. The Afor Umuda Market, which had remained inactive for several years, has now been transformed into a modern marketplace featuring lock-up shops and improved facilities, offering traders a renewed sense of hope and opportunity.
Speaking during the inspection, Hon. Akaliro described the project as part of his broader mission to revitalize grassroots economies and empower local communities through infrastructural renewal.
“When I first visited this market years ago, I saw the pain of abandonment in the eyes of our people. Today, I am happy that Afor Umuda is back to life. This project represents my belief that true leadership means touching lives in practical ways,” he said.
He further assured the people of Umuda Ofeme that his representation will continue to prioritize projects that directly impact their livelihoods.
“We will not stop here. My goal is to ensure that every community in Umuahia North feels the positive effect of good governance. Development must reach every corner, especially our rural communities where economic activity begins,” Akaliro added.
Community members who spoke during the visit could not hide their excitement over the revival of the market. Mrs. Chinyere Nwachukwu, a trader at Afor Umuda Market, described Hon. Akaliro as a “leader with a heart for the people.” She said, “thanks to Hon. Akaliro, business has returned to A for Umuda, and families are smiling again. He has shown us that leadership is about action, not promises.”
Another community elder, Mr Emmanuel Ndukwe, lauded Akaliro’s efforts and called him a blessing to Umuahia North.
“We have had leaders come and go, but none remembered this market the way he did. The new Afor Umuda Market is now a center of commerce once again, and we are proud of his vision,” he stated.
As the visit came to an end, traders and youth groups in the area pledged their continued support for Hon. Akaliro, urging him to sustain his people-centered style of governance. The rejuvenation of Afor Umuda Market stands as a testament to his resolve to build sustainable communities through purposeful leadership and infrastructural transformation.
