...Decries Increasing Drug Use in Ohuhu Community
Umuahia, Abia State |November 8, 2025 —
The Member representing Umuahia North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, has raised alarm over the rising cases of drug abuse, theft, and vandalism among youths within the Ohuhu community.
He described the trend as a growing social menace that threatens the moral and developmental fabric of the society.
In a statement made available to newsmen, Hon. Akaliro lamented that many young people have resorted to smoking and using illicit substances as an excuse for wayward behavior and acts of indiscipline.
“It saddens me to observe that some of our youths have turned to drug use as a means of defending or excusing their misconduct,” he stated.
“This is not only disappointing but destructive to their future and to the image of Ohuhu.”
The lawmaker further revealed that reports reaching his office indicate that some youths have taken to stealing and vandalizing properties, often selling stolen items to scrap dealers who roam the community.
“I have also received disturbing reports that some of these young people engage in stealing and vandalizing people’s properties, selling them to the roaming iron scrap dealers, mostly Hausa traders. This attitude is shameful and unacceptable,” Akaliro emphasized.
He stressed that such behavior would no longer be tolerated and called for a concerted effort by all community stakeholders to address the crisis.
“As the representative of the good people of Umuahia North State Constituency, I find this development deeply troubling. We must all rise; parents, traditional rulers, community leaders, and security agencies, to tackle this menace before it consumes the future of our youth,” he declared.
Hon. Akaliro appealed directly to the youths, urging them to embrace positive values, education, and hard work as tools for personal and communal growth.
“To our young people, I say this: the path of drug abuse and crime leads only to destruction. You have the strength, creativity, and intelligence to build a better life for yourselves and our community,” he said.
“Channel your energy into education, skill acquisition, and productive ventures that will bring pride to Ohuhu and to Umuahia North as a whole.”
The lawmaker also reaffirmed his commitment to working with relevant agencies to promote youth empowerment initiatives and community-based campaigns against drug abuse. He promised to collaborate with schools, churches, and traditional institutions to restore discipline and dignity among the youth.
“Together, we can restore discipline, dignity, and hope among our young people,” Akaliro assured.
Community members have lauded Hon. Akaliro’s stance, describing it as timely and courageous. They expressed optimism that his call to action would inspire renewed efforts to protect the younger generation from social decay and to rebuild the moral foundation of the community.
