The Senate was thrown into mourning on Wednesday, following the reported death of Senator Okey Ezea, who represented Enugu North Senatorial District.
Also, Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Mbah, described his death as a huge loss to the state and Nigeria.
Ezea, popularly known as Ideke, reportedly passed away on Tuesday while receiving medical treatment.
A family source said the lawmaker had earlier sought treatment in Germany before his condition deteriorated.
The first public indication of his death appeared on social media, when a constituent, Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, widely known online as ‘Senator,’ posted: “Sad News. Senator Okey Ezea, representing Enugu North, is dead… Rest in Peace.”
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central confirmed the news on her verified Facebook page, describing Ezea as a wise, gentle, and compassionate colleague.
She wrote: “Rest in peace, Distinguished Senator Okey Ezea. You were a good man! Wise and gentle. Your prayers kept me going through my darkest moments, and I will miss you in chambers. Enugu North Senatorial District, Kogi Central honours your senator and mourns with you.”
In a statement on Wednesday, Mr Jideofor Ezea later announced the demise of the lawmaker.
According to the statement, the senator died on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at about 11:07 p.m. in a private hospital in Lagos after a brief illness.
