Abia State |December 28, 2025 —
Awomukwu community in Ikwuano Local Government Area erupted into a rare spectacle of colour, influence, and celebration on December 27 as eminent legal icon and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr Barrister Monday Ubani, laid his mother, Late Nsomma Gladys Ubani, to eternal rest.
Rather than the usual quiet solemnity of funerals, the ancient town witnessed an extraordinary convergence that turned the burial into a celebration of legacy, unity, and honour. From early hours of the day, Abia State was effectively on pause as dignitaries, traditional rulers, captains of industry, and cultural leaders flooded Awomukwu in their numbers.
The ceremony was charged with excitement from start to finish. The warm ambience, colourful decor, and seamless coordination reflected a family determined to celebrate a fulfilled life of 90 remarkable years. Dr Ubani and his wife were visibly moved as they received guests and paid their last respects to their mother and mother in law in a manner many described as noble and unforgettable.
Political weight added gravity to the occasion with the presence of Abia State Governor Alex Otti and Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Senators, members of the House of Representatives, members of the Abia State House of Assembly, and top government officials also attended, reinforcing the national significance of the event.
The burial further assumed a celebratory aura as entertainment stars lit up the gathering. Popular music sensation KCee Limpopo and respected Nollywood veteran Kanayo O Kanayo brought glamour, while business mogul E Money arrived with a noticeable entourage, drawing admiration from guests and onlookers.
Traditional rulers, Senior Advocates of Nigeria, and notable personalities from across the country filled the venue, turning the burial ground into a meeting point of authority, respect, and cultural pride. Every movement, from the entrance procession to the seating arrangement, carried an air of class and careful planning.
Hospitality was taken to another level as guests were treated to an impressive spread of delicacies, ranging from rich local dishes to intercontinental cuisine, a reflection of the generosity and open heartedness of the Ubani family.
In his brief appreciation, Dr Barrister Monday Ubani expressed gratitude to God for strength and thanked all who stood with his family, noting that the overwhelming show of love transformed their moment of loss into a celebration of values his late mother embodied.
Indeed, it was not just a burial, but a moment that blended grief with gratitude, tradition with prestige, and sorrow with celebration. As Awomukwu played host to the nation, Abia was agog, and a matriarch was sent off in a style befitting her enduring legacy.
