Akaliro Applauds PHC Revamp, Says Grassroots Healthcare Is Essential

Abia State |December 16, 2025 —

Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, Member representing Umuahia North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, has emphasized that functional Primary Healthcare Centres are central to the delivery of accessible, affordable, and effective healthcare services across the state.

Akaliro made this assertion while reacting to the remarkable progress recorded in Abia State’s health sector under the administration of Gov Alex Otti, particularly in the revitalization and upgrading of Primary Healthcare Centres. He described the renewed focus on grassroots healthcare as a strategic intervention that directly addresses the health needs of ordinary citizens.

According to the lawmaker, the restoration of once-abandoned PHCs has significantly reduced the pressure on secondary and tertiary health institutions, while bringing essential medical services closer to communities. He noted that functional PHCs are the first point of contact for most citizens and remain the most cost-effective means of improving public health outcomes.

Functional primary healthcare centres are the backbone of effective healthcare delivery,” Akaliro said. “When PHCs are properly equipped, staffed, and accessible, they prevent minor ailments from becoming life-threatening conditions and ensure that healthcare is available to everyone, regardless of location or income level.”

Hon. Akaliro explained that the impact of PHC reforms is most evident in maternal and child healthcare, disease prevention, and early diagnosis. He stressed that improved immunization coverage, antenatal services, and health education at the community level are key to reducing preventable deaths.

Strong PHCs protect mothers and children, promote preventive care, and support early detection of diseases,” he stated. “This is how a government builds a healthy population and reduces avoidable strain on hospitals.”

The legislator further commended Gov Otti for prioritizing health despite the challenges inherited by the administration, noting that the visible transformation of healthcare infrastructure demonstrates clear leadership and policy consistency.

Reviving the primary healthcare system in Abia required courage and commitment,” Akaliro said.

What we are seeing today is the outcome of deliberate investment and a leadership that understands that development begins with healthy citizens.”

He also assured that he remains committed to strengthening the legal and policy framework that supports healthcare reforms. According to him, sustained legislative backing is necessary to ensure proper funding, workforce development, and accountability within the health sector.

As lawmakers, we are determined to support policies and budgets that will deepen these reforms and make them sustainable,” he added. “Healthcare delivery must be shielded from inconsistency, because lives depend on it.”

Hon. Akaliro called on communities to take ownership of the revitalized PHCs by utilizing the facilities and supporting healthcare workers. He noted that community engagement is vital to maintaining standards and ensuring long-term success.

With functional PHCs in place, Abia is building a healthcare system that is inclusive, efficient, and resilient,” Akaliro said. “This is the foundation upon which quality healthcare for all can be achieved.”
