Abia State |December 31, 2025 —
Chief Mascot Uzor-Kalu, Abia 2027 governorship aspirant, has underscored the vital role of political opposition as an integral part of democratic governance.
In his statement, Mascot Uzor-Kalu emphasised that opposition should be viewed as constructive criticism that strengthens leadership, rather than as an adversarial force.
“Opposition is part of democracy, not hostility,” he stated. “A healthy democracy thrives on debate, accountability, and the constant exchange of ideas. It is through robust opposition that policies are refined, leaders are held accountable, and the people benefit from better governance.”
He observed that in many instances, political opposition is wrongly perceived as an attack on authority rather than a mechanism for progress. According to Uzor-Kalu, such misconceptions undermine democratic principles and weaken public trust in institutions. He urged political actors to embrace dissent as a tool for constructive engagement.
“When opposition is treated as an enemy, governance suffers,” he said. “Leaders must recognise that criticism and alternative perspectives are opportunities to improve policies and deliver tangible results. Democracy is not a contest of personalities but a platform to serve the people.”
The APC chieftain linked the effectiveness of opposition to transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in governance. He argued that citizens are the ultimate beneficiaries when political debates focus on ideas and solutions rather than personal rivalries or party labels.
“In Abia, we must cultivate a political culture where opposition parties and leaders engage on the merits of ideas, not conflict,” MUK noted. “Opposition ensures that government remains dynamic, innovative, and attentive to the needs of the people.”
He also stressed the importance of civic participation, encouraging citizens to actively follow policy debates, question government actions, and hold elected officials accountable.
“Democracy is not complete without an informed and engaged citizenry,” he said. “The people’s voice, amplified through lawful dissent and advocacy, is what keeps leadership grounded and effective.”
Concluding his remarks, Mascot Uzor-Kalu reaffirmed his commitment to a leadership style that values inclusivity, dialogue, and accountability. He called on political stakeholders in Abia State to view opposition not as a threat, but as a partner in shaping governance that is transparent, responsive, and transformative.
“True leadership recognises that the ultimate goal is the welfare of the people, and opposition is an indispensable part of achieving that goal,” he said.
