Hon. Barr. Anderson K Akaliro hails Abia Journalists as they celebrate World Press Freedom Day

Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, Member representing Umuahia North State Constituency in Abia House of Assembly, joined journalists yesterday to commemorate World Press Freedom Day.
He lauded journalists as "democracy's gatekeepers" and emphasized the crucial role of a free and independent press in promoting good governance, accountability, and transparency.

"Journalists are the unsung heroes of our democracy," Hon. Akaliro said. "Your courage, dedication, and commitment to truth-telling are essential to holding those in power accountable and ensuring that the voices of the marginalized are heard."
He also acknowledged the challenges faced by journalists, including harassment, intimidation, and violence, and pledged to continue advocating for policies that protect press freedom and support the work of journalists.
"We must ensure that journalists can work without fear of persecution or retribution," he said. "Their ability to report the truth is crucial to our democracy, and we must protect and cherish it."

Journalists present at the briefing appreciated the lawmaker's support and commitment to press freedom, and reiterated their dedication to upholding the highest standards of journalism.
