Abia Lawmaker, Hon. Akaliro Condemns Human Trafficking, Calls for War on Traffickers

Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, the Member representing Umuahia North State Constituency in the Abia House of Assembly, has issued a strong condemnation of the recent trafficking of ten Nigerian girls to Ghana.

The girls were lured with promises of employment as salesgirls but were instead forced into prostitution.

Hon. Akaliro called for a unified and aggressive approach to combat human trafficking in Nigeria.
"We must declare war on human traffickers," he stated emphatically.
He highlighted the importance of vigilance among parents, urging them to always inquire about their children's whereabouts when they are taken away by relatives or friends.

Recall that the girls' plight came to light thanks to the swift actions of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) in Ghana.
NIDO members, upon discovering the situation, immediately notified the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), leading to the prompt rescue of the girls.

Hon. Akaliro lauded the efforts of NIDO in Ghana and emphasized the crucial role of such organizations in the fight against human trafficking.
"We must do everything within our power to combat this modern-day slavery," he stressed.

Following their rescue, the girls will be handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), which will ensure their return to their respective states for comprehensive counseling and rehabilitation.

The lawmaker's call to action underscores the urgent need for systemic changes and heightened community awareness to prevent future incidents of human trafficking.
