Barr. Anderson Akaliro Urges Better Welfare for Healthcare Professionals, Says 'Japa syndrome' Will hurt the nation

September 27, 2024 -
The "Japa syndrome," a trend where Nigerian healthcare workers emigrate to other countries in search of better opportunities, has caught the attention of Umuahia North Rep, Hon. Anderson Akaliro, Esq. He's calling for improved welfare packages for doctors and other healthcare workers to curb this alarming brain drain.

Speaking to National Sunrise Reporters on Thursday, Akaliro emphasized that resident doctors are the backbone of any country's medical services, and Nigeria is no exception.
"It's essential that we ensure adequate welfare packages for doctors," he stressed.
This includes prioritizing their welfare, addressing abduction and kidnapping concerns, and providing fair remuneration.

Barr. Akaliro continued, "The Challenges Faced by our Healthcare Professionals include; Poor working conditions, Low salaries, Limited opportunities for career advancement, Inadequate healthcare infrastructure, Lack of job security and so on.
If left unaddressed, the root causes of this migration could threaten Nigeria's continued survival," he warned.

The country's healthcare sector is already feeling the pinch, with many sub-specialties now inoperative due to the departure of specialists.

Akaliro also encourages healthcare professionals to focus on managing medical waste, which accounts for 30% of global waste production, and become environmental advocates in the fight against climate change.

As Nigeria grapples with growing insecurity and economic hardship, Akaliro Urges better working conditions, fair remuneration, and enhanced healthcare delivery. He urged his colleagues to remain committed to providing top-notch care for Nigerians.

The "Japa syndrome" is a symptom of broader issues plaguing Nigeria, including poverty, unemployment, and economic instability. Addressing these underlying factors is crucial to stemming the tide of healthcare professionals leaving the country.

Will FG heed Akaliro's call and prioritize its healthcare workers, or will the "Japa syndrome" continue to drain the country's medical talent? Only time will tell.
