In a bid to revitalize the economic fortunes of his constituents, the Honourable Member representing Umuahia North (Ohuhu) State Constituency, Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, has flagged off the reconstruction of the popular Afor-Umuda Ofeme Market.
The ceremony, which took place on Monday, September 2, 2024, was attended by dignitaries from the community, including the Chairman of Umuda-Ofeme, Mr. Ugochukwu Chukwunta, and the village head, Chief Augustine Ike.
In his remarks, Hon. Akaliro lamented the level of decay and deterioration the market had suffered over the years. He recalled the market's former glory, when it was a hub of commercial activity, attracting traders from far and wide. However, he noted that the market had become a shadow of its former self, necessitating the need for reconstruction.
The lawmaker expressed his commitment to reviving the lost glory of the market, stating that the reconstruction would transform it into a modern daily market with conveniences. He emphasized that this project was part of his constituency projects aimed at improving the lives of his constituents.
Mr. Ugochukwu Chukwunta, Chairman of Umuda-Ofeme, thanked Hon. Akaliro for remembering the people of Umuda-Ofeme. He noted that the market's reconstruction had been a subject of campaign promises for years, but Hon. Akaliro had matched words with action. He prayed for God's blessings on the lawmaker.
Chief Augustine Ike, the village head, appreciated Hon. Akaliro's effort to revive the ancient market. He assured him of the support of his people, stating that they do not forget good deeds.
The reconstructed market will feature modern daily market stalls with conveniences and car parks for traders and customers. This project is expected to boost economic activity in the area and improve the lives of the people of Umuda-Ofeme.
