The Igbo World Union (IWU), in commemoration of Nigeria's 64th year of independence, has commended Nigerians for their unwavering tenacity, resilience, and unity despite the multifaceted challenges facing the nation.
In a statement made by the Union’s President-General, His Imperial Majesty, Amb. Sir Dr. Mishak Nnanta (KJW, Ksm, JP), Gburugburu Ndigbo Dum, he highlighted the remarkable strength and courage of Nigerians, especially in the face of social, economic, and political adversities.
Dr. Mishak Nnanta noted that Nigeria’s journey since its independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960, has been defined by a series of trials and triumphs.
“As we mark this year’s Independence Day, it is pertinent to applaud the tenacity, resilience, and unbreakable spirit of the Nigerian people,” he stated. "Our nation has endured civil war, military coups, economic downturns, and, more recently, insecurity, yet Nigerians remain hopeful, determined, and industrious."
Reflecting on the history of the country, he paid tribute to the founding fathers of the nation, such as Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Ahmadu Bello, and others who fought for the freedom and sovereignty of Nigeria. He acknowledged that while their dream of a united and prosperous nation remains a work in progress, the indomitable spirit of Nigerians continues to fuel that vision.
In his address, Nnanta did not shy away from the many hurdles still confronting the nation. He pointed to the escalating insecurity in various regions, including the rise of insurgency in the northeast, kidnappings in the northwest, and ethnic tensions across the country.
Additionally, economic instability, exemplified by inflation, unemployment, and poor infrastructure, continues to strain the daily lives of citizens. The youth, who form a significant portion of the population, are particularly affected by these issues.
However, the IWU President was quick to assert that Nigeria’s challenges, though daunting, present opportunities for growth and transformation. He emphasized the importance of collective responsibility, urging Nigerians to take ownership of the nation’s destiny.
“It is our duty as citizens to contribute positively to nation-building. We must focus on what unites us rather than what divides us,” he urged.

He also encouraged the government to create more opportunities for youth engagement and empowerment, stressing that the future of Nigeria lies in the hands of its vibrant young population.
