Independence Day: Igbo World Union Salutes the Resilience of Nigerians, Calls for Renewed Sense of Patriotism

The Igbo World Union (IWU), in commemoration of Nigeria's 64th year of independence, has commended Nigerians for their unwavering tenacity, resilience, and unity despite the multifaceted challenges facing the nation.
In a statement made by the Union’s President-General, His Imperial Majesty, Amb. Sir Dr. Mishak Nnanta (KJW, Ksm, JP), Gburugburu Ndigbo Dum, he highlighted the remarkable strength and courage of Nigerians, especially in the face of social, economic, and political adversities.

Dr. Mishak Nnanta noted that Nigeria’s journey since its independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960, has been defined by a series of trials and triumphs.

As we mark this year’s Independence Day, it is pertinent to applaud the tenacity, resilience, and unbreakable spirit of the Nigerian people,” he stated. "Our nation has endured civil war, military coups, economic downturns, and, more recently, insecurity, yet Nigerians remain hopeful, determined, and industrious."

Reflecting on the history of the country, he paid tribute to the founding fathers of the nation, such as Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Ahmadu Bello, and others who fought for the freedom and sovereignty of Nigeria. He acknowledged that while their dream of a united and prosperous nation remains a work in progress, the indomitable spirit of Nigerians continues to fuel that vision.

In his address, Nnanta did not shy away from the many hurdles still confronting the nation. He pointed to the escalating insecurity in various regions, including the rise of insurgency in the northeast, kidnappings in the northwest, and ethnic tensions across the country.
Additionally, economic instability, exemplified by inflation, unemployment, and poor infrastructure, continues to strain the daily lives of citizens. The youth, who form a significant portion of the population, are particularly affected by these issues.

However, the IWU President was quick to assert that Nigeria’s challenges, though daunting, present opportunities for growth and transformation. He emphasized the importance of collective responsibility, urging Nigerians to take ownership of the nation’s destiny.
It is our duty as citizens to contribute positively to nation-building. We must focus on what unites us rather than what divides us,” he urged.

His Imperial Majesty called on leaders at all levels to prioritize good governance, transparency, and inclusivity to address the grievances of marginalized communities and foster national unity. He also encouraged the government to create more opportunities for youth engagement and empowerment, stressing that the future of Nigeria lies in the hands of its vibrant young population.

The Igbo World Union, as a prominent socio-cultural organization, used the occasion to highlight the contributions of the Igbo people to the development of Nigeria. Gburugburu Ndigbo Dum emphasized that the Igbo, renowned for their entrepreneurial spirit, have been integral to the economic progress of Nigeria, particularly in the fields of commerce, industry, and education. He also acknowledged the role of the Igbo in the fight for justice, equality, and human rights, standing as champions of a more inclusive and equitable Nigeria.

Sir Nnanta reiterated the union's commitment to fostering unity, peace, and prosperity among all ethnic groups in Nigeria. He called on all Nigerians to embrace tolerance and understanding, emphasizing that diversity is one of the country’s greatest strengths.

As Igbos, we stand as partners in progress with our fellow Nigerians. Together, we can achieve the Nigeria of our dreams, a nation where every individual, regardless of ethnicity or religion, can thrive and contribute meaningfully,” he affirmed.

While acknowledging the challenges, Nnanta took time to celebrate some of Nigeria’s achievements since independence. He lauded the resilience of Nigerian democracy, which, despite some turbulence, has continued to evolve. The peaceful transition of power in several democratic elections has been a source of pride and a sign of hope for further democratic consolidation.

Nigeria’s achievements in sports, arts, and culture were also highlighted as points of national pride. The global recognition of Nigerian athletes, musicians, and filmmakers is a testament to the talent and creativity within the country.
Mishak Nnanta urged the government to invest more in these sectors, which have the potential to further elevate Nigeria’s international standing and provide employment for millions of young Nigerians.

In conclusion, Amb. Mishak Nnanta called for renewed patriotism among Nigerians. He urged citizens to remain hopeful and to work together towards building a more united and prosperous nation.

Independence Day is not just a time to reflect on our past, but also to commit to a future that is bright and full of promise,” he stated. “We must believe in the Nigerian project and contribute in every way possible to ensure its success.”

The Igbo World Union’s message resonates with many Nigerians who share in the hope of a brighter future despite the current challenges. Nnanta’s statement is a rallying cry for unity, peace, and progress, urging Nigerians to draw strength from their diversity and to continue working towards the vision of a prosperous, just, and united nation.

As Nigeria marks another year of independence, the message from the Igbo World Union serves as a reminder that while the road to nationhood may be long and difficult, the resilience of the Nigerian people remains a beacon of hope. With continued efforts to bridge divides, promote good governance, and invest in the country’s future generations, there is a growing sense of optimism that Nigeria can overcome its challenges and emerge as a stronger, more unified nation.

For the Igbo World Union, this year’s Independence Day is not just a time for reflection, but a moment to reaffirm their commitment to Nigeria's progress and to the well-being of its people. The resilience, unity, and determination of Nigerians remain the key pillars that will carry the nation forward into a future full of promise.
