Umuahia, October 28, 2024 –
Hon. Barr Anderson Akaliro, the lawmaker representing Umuahia North Constituency in Abia State House of Assembly, has called on the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) to guarantee transparent and impartial elections in the upcoming local government polls.
Addressing reporters in Umuahia, Anderson Akaliro stressed that the people of Abia deserve the right to elect their preferred candidates for local government chairmen without interference or manipulation.
"Abians deserve free and fair council elections," Akaliro said, urging ABSIEC to conduct the election with integrity.
He added that the credibility of the electoral process is essential to fostering trust in democratic institutions and ensuring that elected leaders genuinely reflect the will of the people.
He appealed to ABSIEC officials to uphold electoral transparency and fairness, underscoring that local governance plays a critical role in addressing community needs and development.
The lawmaker’s appeal aligns with sentiments expressed by many civic groups and political observers in Abia, who worry about the deserved fairness and the effects it could have on public confidence in the state's political system.
"Our democracy thrives when citizens trust the process," Akaliro noted, encouraging ABSIEC to “rise to the occasion” in ensuring credible elections.
As the election date approaches, all eyes will be on ABSIEC to see if the commission will heed the calls for a transparent election process. The outcome of these elections will not only shape local leadership but could also influence the political climate leading up to future state and national elections.
